Melbourne Spring Fashion Week: Part 2

Find and Discover – this was the theme of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2011, in celebration of a city that continually unfolds and takes guests on a seductive and sophisticated journey to reveals its hidden secrets. Melbourne’s finest fashion designers did just that during the Designer Series last week, as they showcased their collections to a captivated audience.

The old-world Hollywood glamour and femininity of the opening night, was followed on Wednesday with designs from boutique designers Alice Euphemia, Dhini, Fat, Gorman, Green With Envy, Kings of Carnaby, Leonard St, Life With Bird, Megan Park, Nevenka and Obus. The catwalk came alive as the current colour-blocking trend was infused with florals, patterns and striking designs.

Thursday night’s Enjoy show featured party, resort and swimwear from Alexifreeman, Autonomy, Bettina Liano, Jack London, Leopold, Ristefsky Macheda, Thom Finch and White Suede.

The finale show, Senso Uniquo, showcased avant-garde and cutting edge fashion from Above., Alistair Trung, Alpha60, Arnsdorf, Carly Hunter, From Britten Product Laboratory, Kuwaii, Limedrop, S!X and Trimapee. While the designs were modern in nature, there were pieces with vintage undertones.

The Cointreau Art of The Cocktail Hour inspired hospitality suites continued to play host to guests and designers, prior to the runway shows.  I spoke with some of the designers to discover the inspiration behind their collections. The husband and wife duo from Limedrop spoke about their Calypso collection, which payed homage to those Americans who spent long, hot summers in country resorts in the ‘60s, before jet travel became popular (reminiscent of the film, Dirty Dancing).

The creative powerhouses behind S!X have named their retail space, La Chambre de Bonne, in honour of their extensive travel to France, where they stayed in rustic locations rather than fancy hotels. S!X’s uniques viewpoint of vintage is not necessarily to reference past eras, but to recycle and reinterpretate designs from their past collections.

The Emerald Peacock bar played host to the Cointreau after party where designers, guests and models mingled and enjoyed Cointreau Blush cocktails. The atmosphere was a celebratory one, signalling an end to a successful week of Melbourne showing the world what its designers have to offer.

Best wishes, Gaynor.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week: Part 1

The Fashion…

Spring has sprung and fashionistas are flocking to Melbourne Spring Fashion Week to celebrate the changing of the seasons. As a major sponsor of the event, Cointreau has created Art of the Cocktail Hour inspired hospitality suites for guests to enjoy prior to the runway shows. Last night, I attended the Manhattan nights inspired room before viewing the first 7pm show of the Designer Series.

The stunning ambiance of the suite was off set by vases of beautiful spring blooms, sitting against a backdrop of paintings from the historic Melbourne Town Hall.  Guests were treated to culinary delights and Cointreau cocktails, including the Cointreau Blush, which was fresh and sublime.

I spoke with Dom Bagnato and Yeojin Bae, two of the designers featured in the runway show, and asked them about their collections and whether as designers they were inspired by the vintage era. Dom said that he definitely references past eras in his collections, and Yeojin is drawn to ‘20s and ‘30s fabrics, as a starting point for her feminine designs.

Gala, the first runway show of the Designer Series, promised fabulous gowns, glamour and exquisite detail, and guests were not disappointed.  With Danni Minogue taking her seat as the ambassador of MSFW, an aviary inspired ballet performance opened the show, before models, led by Sophie Van Den Akker, strutted the catwalk in an array of designs from Arthur Galan AG, Aurelio Costarella, Christine, Dom Bagnato, Gwendolynne, nicolangela, Rachel Gilbert, Thurley and Yeojin Bae.

Vintage styles were reinterpreted for the modern-day woman, with beads, lace, fringing, tassels and feathers all giving a nod to the fashions of past decades. Arthur Galan AG and Dom Bagnato both heralded a clear return of sophisticated suiting for men, with a modern cut edge, along with ‘20s styled hair for gentlemen.

The Cocktails…

Aside from enjoying a cocktail in the MSFW hospitality suites, or popping into the Emerald Peacock, for one of the MSFW Cointreau after parties, you can also enjoy Cointreau cocktails at other MSFW After Dark events.  A number of Melbourne’s iconic bars are creating Cointreau inspired cocktails and dining experiences to celebrate this very fashionable week.

Visit the Cabinet Bar and Balcony, tucked away in one of Melbourne’s famous lane ways, and sip on a delightful Cointreau, sloe gin, apple and lime cocktail, while immersing yourself in the Parisian style surroundings. Oui oui.

The Carlton Hotel and Palmz is all luxury with an undertone of mystery.  They have a labyrinth of plush velvet booths and the tropical rooftop bar has dazzling views of the city. Indulge in their Cointreau inspired cocktail, Le Corelle, served with nibbles.

Get your swank on in the stylish and sophisticated surrounds of The Longroom, and enjoy tapas and a Cointreau cocktail for $15.

Or, find out why RU-CO at the Grand Hyatt was recently voted Melbourne’s bar of the year, while partaking in a Grapefruit Martini with Cointreau.

The décor of Tony Starr’s Kitten Club will transport you back to the ‘50s and ‘60s, but you can still channel Carrie Bradshaw, with a Cointreau Cosmopolitan and tapas for $20.

Visit the MSFW website for further details of  the runway shows, the Cointreau After Dark Series, and other fabulous MSFW events unfolding around Melbourne.

Best wishes, Gaynor.
